Man POWER Monday – Colin Kaepernick has “woke swag”

It is “Man POWER Monday”!!! This week I am featuring none other than Colin Kaepernick. He became a household name when, as an NFL quarterback, he began kneeling during the national anthem as a form of protest against the social injustices taking place in minority communities. His ability to stand up for what he believed in despite the fact that it cost him his career is pretty darn (trying to be a southern lady here :-)) impressive to me.  What is even more impressive is, despite being black balled by the NFL, Colin Kaepernick is still making his voice heard and continuing to raise awareness about social injustices that plague minority communities.

I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said. “To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.

This is not something that I am going to run by anybody. I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.

-Colin Kaepernick’s response to reporter Steve Wyche when questioned about his refusal to stand for the National Anthem

In case you didn’t know, Kaepernick’s social activism is not limited to kneeling during the national anthem.  He is responsible for founding and funding the national Know Your Rights Camps. His goal in creating these camps was to  empower and motivate the youth in various communities while teaching them various ways to interact with law enforcement. Additionally, Kaepernick recently completed his Million Dollar Pledge   where he donated $1,000,000 of his own money to various organizations throughout the country fighting for justice.

Recently, Kaepernick was one of eight to receive the W.E.B. Dubois medal from Harvard for his significant contributions to black history and culture.

People live with social injustice every single day. And we expect them to thrive in situations where they are just trying to survive. -statement made by Kaepernick during his speech at Harvard where he received the W.E.B. Dubois medal

Prior to playing for the NFL, Kaepernick excelled academically at the University of Nevada in Reno where he earned a degree in business management.

This week I am totally crushing on Colin Kaepernick because of his “woke swag”. Hats off to this man that is the epitome of the words spoken by Malcolm X:

If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.

Much Love,

Tonza

  1. Colin Kaepernick is so impressive because he stood up for his beliefs and it cost him his livelihood. Unfortunately in the black community we have so many issues to address that pale in comparison to kneeling for a flag. Lack of education and poverty continue to hold us down and in place as a people.
