Man POWER Monday – Calvon Jones has “spiritual” swag

It is “Man POWER Monday”!!!

It seems like a few short years ago I was attending my nephew’s high school graduation. While my family and I were all so excited about this milestone, we were a little more excited about the post graduation celebration we had planned. After all, it was just a high school graduation. It wasn’t like Michelle or Barack Obama would be gracing everyone with a memorable commencement speech.

Unable to snag one of the Obama’s, the school decided to invite one of its alum back to offer words of inspiration to the current graduates. How cute… As the young man took his place at the podium I was hopeful that his words of inspiration would be short and sweet. I was ready for the after party! 🙂 And then he began to speak… All I could say was “MY GOD!” as I stood on my feet, clapping and cheering, the entire time he spoke. When he finally finished delivering his words of inspiration, I was close to shouting “More! More!”, forget the after party. 🙂  Calvon Jones was by far one of the most dynamic and inspirational speakers I have heard.

Because this young man left such a strong and lasting impression on me, and many others, I am featuring none other than Calvon Jones on this “Man POWER Monday”. His “spiritual swag” is a force to be reckoned with.

The baby of four children, Calvon Jones hails from Garysburg, a small town in Eastern North Carolina.  Following graduation from KIPP ENC, Calvon went on to complete his undergraduate degree at Morehouse College.  And while college graduation is a major accomplishment in itself for our children in eastern North Carolina, this young man did not stop there. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree from Yale Divinity School. WOOT! WOOT! His clear gift from God, coupled with his academic achievements, led to Calvon recently being selected to serve as the Associate Pastor of Children and Youth at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois.

Reverend Dr. Otis Moss III and Reverend Calvon Jones

Inspired by his Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Calvon intends to be a pastor, theologian, and activist who goes beyond preaching about “things will get better on the other side”. Instead, he intends to directly address and deal with systemic issues we confront in our world now. GOTTA GIVE HIM ANOTHER WOOT! WOOT! 🙂

When I asked him about his incredibly supportive parents, Minister Calvin Jones and Minister Maebelle Jones, Calvon said, “I am because of them.”  Because of them, Calvon says that he knows what it means to walk in integrity and humility, and to embody Christian ethos.

Without a doubt Trinity United Church of Christ is blessed to have this young man from the small town of Garysburg, North Carolina as part of their ministerial leadership team. I suspect the world will be feeling the presence of this awesome young man in the near future. Calvon makes me so proud. He is proof that you do not have to be limited by your zip code.

Invest in all of our children and our society will blossom into greatness! If you have any doubts about that, check this young man out.

Much Love,

Tonza

  1. This is a wonderful story! I am proud of him. It is sooo good to see our African American young men and women achieving success and become trailblazers.
